Start your day with a healthy breakfast
Many people believe that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and lots will agree they are not wrong. One thing we would always advise is to ensure that if you plan to work out in the morning leave at least an hour after breakfast to ensure it is digested before training commences. It is a great idea to ensure that you have a good healthy breakfast before you work out and include some carbohydrates which could help you to work out for longer. Recommendations for a healthy breakfast to maximise your fitness could include:
-
low fat milk
-
Whole grain cereals
-
Whole grain breads
-
Banana
-
Yogurts
-
Fruit juices and smoothies
Try to limit caffeine intake but this is advice through all aspects of trying to maximise your fitness with healthy eating.
Portion Control
It is important when trying to maximise your fitness with healthy eating that you consider your portion sizes. This is not only for the days that you are exercising but on rest days to. Most of us fail to regulate our portions which in turn leads to consuming additional calories we don’t need.
When you are thinking of meals for before exercise portion control is important for you to ensure that you give your body long enough to digest before working out. Large meals need 3-4 hours before a workout to ensure proper digestion and smaller meals require around 1-3 hours. Not allowing enough time to digest your meal before exercise can cause stitches, heartburn and feeling like you have less energy.
Snack healthy
Snacks can be a good way to boost your energy pre and post workout of they are the right snack. Some snacks and drinks can really help to aid you in maximising your fitness through healthy eating. Healthy snacks before a work out can also stop you feeling hungry if your workout is a good few hours after a meal. Options for healthy snacks we think could benefit are;
-
Peanut butter
-
Smoothies
-
Yoghurt
-
Energy bars
-
Fruit
-
Granola
-
Sports drinks
Post work out meals
Thinking about what you are eating post workout is important in order to maximise fitness through healthy eating. This helps to ensure that you give your body what it needs to recover from your workout. A good tip is to incorporate some carbohydrates and protein into a healthy meal if you can within about two hours of working out. This helps to ensure your body is replenished.
Hydrate
It is not just your food intake that is important here it is vital to remain well hydrated. This is important at all stages of your workout, before, during and afterwards. Not only that, ensure that you also drink plenty on your rest days. Water is the best way to remain hydrated, however if you are planning a long or particularly challenging workout then sports drinks can help as they can give you a short-term energy boost.
